Within a fragmented yet formal layout of the city, Murphy's oil paintings take the viewer on a visual journey through colourful grids, symbols and patterns. Within doorways and behind windows we glimpse the characters - both familiar and strange who form a part of city life. The city is a fun and vibrant place, but there is an underlying tension that permeates our world of high rise buildings and consumerism, and it is through a combination of humour and irony that Murphy is able to poetically express and convey this message. |
